What have you noticed with regard to interest from your clients/prospect clients in mobile apps?
Mobile applications are becoming a frequent research request with our current clients and in the last year we’ve seen a significant increase in inquiries from business and entrepreneurs alike.   Their needs have ranged from practical apps individuals can use regularly, gaming, online shopping with direct client contact to apps that are integrated into a web based content management system.  In particular, most companies that have contacted us for development are interested in creating functional applications that their employees or members can benefit directly from or allow their people to streamline processes; saving time and money.

What are some examples of projects you have worked on, particularly unique clients or undertakings, in this space?
We’ve been fortunate in our development and integration and have created apps for iPhone, iPad, Android and Tablet. In particular, one of the apps that we are most proud of was our efforts with the IBEW Local 22 Union application.  This app was cross platformed and optimized for iOS and Android devices and is integrated into a web based content management system which can upload data to phones for use later when there is not an internet connection available. The purpose of the app was to assist members and potential union members to see job calls, business development and to join if you are a non-member.  Furthermore, Union members can login, pay union dues, easily resign and track various forms and now can sign-up / pay for educational classes provided by the Union.  As the app has been released, there has been a steady adoption of the app and a very positive response from union members. Truly, a fine example of how cooperation and a detailed understanding of goals results in success.

What are the biggest misconceptions you encounter from your clients about the app development process or just in apps in general and their biz benefit?
The largest issue we’ve found is the misconception that an app is simply a website that is available on a phone; rather than an application that can offer much more.  A mobile app has the ability to leverage it’s direct connection to the owner of the phone and provide services / information such as geolocation, camera and voice integration, calendar integration and a link to business contacts at their fingertips.  All of this without having the need to type an address or reference a bookmark.

What are some ways our readers/your existing clients or prospects can make the process a little easier for you and assure the best outcome?
Businesses and individuals can benefit greatly by contacting a professional to get an initial list of needs established and then working from that starting point to plan and document the functions / processes that will be needed for the end user to operate the app and also provide the best user experience.  Like most projects, the better the planning the faster and less costly the process.

 What else would you like to add, with regard to suggestions for our readers who are considering apps for their ventures? Or just with regard to apps in general?
When considering the creation of an app I would recommend looking into the existing products that are out, and if there is something similar, look into the pros and cons behind the interface, graphics and process.  Improvements are everywhere and creating a great user experience encourages continued use and also makes it easy to expand your base.  Another consideration is what market you’ll be targeting and if your user base is more likely to use an iPhone, iPad, Tablet or Android device.  Each requires programming specific to the platform and can increase costs significantly.

The primary function of the site is to produce awareness of their cause, encourage donations to support wounded warriors and their families and also create an easy to use website so soldiers and their families can apply for the Wounded Warriors Family Support services.  We also incorporated key SEO strategies that automatically create search engine friendly pages which leaves their staff open to create content without the worry on how this effects their page rank.

The internal posting structure of the CMS was developed to allow their staff, and 92 West if needed, to efficiently post an article or point of interest once and allow it to automatically populate in each area needed.  We then had their news / events connected to Facebook and Twitter so each post will actually feed their social media without having to duplicate those efforts as well.

The results… well they were awesome and the site continues to get accolades from their donors and people who are new to the organization.

It’s 2011 and we here at 92 West think it’s time to get back to basics; namely branding and brand development. The basics behind branding is that people often fail to recognize the difference their brand and their brand identity. Similar terms, but different in what they mean to your marketing and advertising efforts. Also, knowing some of the basics will better equip you when dealing with your preferred identity, graphic or web design professional.

What is a Brand?

As new companies come out, competition increases and creates a near infinite amount of choices. Companies need to look for ways to connect to customers to create lifelong relationships; connect emotionally and become irreplaceable…

Case in point… I don’t need Starbucks… but I love it (don’t tell the wife)… Although I have my questions if they love me back ;) .

In any case, a strong brand will stand out in the densely crowded marketplace. People fall in love with brands (Starbucks ;) ), trust them and truly believe in their superiority to their competitors.

A brand is a person’s gut feeling about a product, service or company and illuminates answers to the following fundamental questions:

  • who you are?
  • who needs to know?
  • how they will find out?
  • why should they care?

To sum it up, a brand should help consumers choose from the infinite amount of choices and should reassure the consumer that they’ve made the right choice through communication on the intrinsic quality of the item they purchased. Also, a brand should use distinctive imagery, emotional associations and language that encourage customers to identify with their brand.

Honestly, there’s a lot more to this basic branding, but I think your getting the picture. Choose your audience. Communicate with them often and with consistency. Calibrate your message to entice your demographic to identify with you. Simple words… sometimes hard to do.

Now, every point of contact may seem like not a big deal but have you ever called a company and simple decided against using them from how they answered the phone or how a sales person treated you on the floor. Even some of the best restaurants with great cuisine will continue to be unvisited because of one bad waiter. There’s a great deal of choices out there… why would a customer subject themselves to anything less than a great experience.

Be the best brand you can be: Combine imagination and craft with intelligence and insight.

One eye sees. The other feels. That’s brand identity.

Brand identity is something that appeals to the senses and generates a tangible experience. You can touch it, hold it, see it, hear it sing and watch it move. It is the fuel that drives recognition and amplifies the companies difference from it’s competition. Brand identity makes great ideas meaningful and accessible; truly taking many different elements and unifying them into a seamless system.

Make Sense?

If not… look at Target. Pepsi. Coke. Amazon. Many parts. One unified message that organizes color, spirit, message and design. The end result is something that embodies the intangibles… emotion, context and things that matter most to today’s consumers… the essence of the company.

All branding is design driven and victory belongs to the most persevering. Look at GAP… they changed their logo in 2010 and a week later moved it back because of customer backlash.

Fact. Not all ideas are going to work… even if they seem great.

Victory goes to those who don’t “Market Safe” and persevere even when the chips are down.
So now that we know what a brand is and what a brand identity is… let’s talk on the tactful art of Branding. 

Branding is a disciplined and in-depth process that is used to build awareness and extend customer loyalty. Great branding is driven from the top down… meaning if the CEO isn’t behind what marketing is doing… you’ll find their graphics staff in the bar after work bitching about why the message is failing. Make no mistake. Investing in your brand is an investment in your companies future. As technology advances we must seize every opportunity to express why individuals should choose your brand over another.

Perception is Key.

Really… what’s the difference between Nike and Rebook in the 90′s…. I didn’t know then… and I’ve never invested the time… but I know that I like my Nike’s :) .

As you proceed with your companies marketing efforts remember to invest in your core strengths and don’t skimp on understanding the consumer… you may be surprised that your strengths are not what you thoughts. Next… don’t fear innovation. It’s a driving force that won’t let you sit still while your competition passes you by. Finally… remember to communicate and do so often!

The process of branding is simple and structured.

  1. Conduct Research – Your brand is not what you say it is… it’s what they say it is.

  2. Clarify Strategy – The best brand strategy is developed as a creative partnership between the client, the designer and the strategist

  4. Create Points of Contact – Social Media is Word of Mouth on Steroids

  5. Manage Your AssetsKeep to your strategy. Build a Brand. Protect the Message. Engage Your Costomers

A good SEM Campaign, make no mistake, first starts with Benchmarketing against yourself using the following metrics: impressions, clicks and CTR, leads and money spent, in order to determine the cost per click (CPC), total cost of the SEM campaign and the return on investment. Honestly, the search engine optimization marketing is competitive and benchmarketing against competitors leads the way using the following metrics: Coverage, share of the market, share of the costs to market, overall costs and of course ROI… we love ROI.

There are a number of items you can benchmarket your site and your company against, but I believe that none are more important than natural search verses paid traffic. According to ComScore qSearch data, the total traffic from paid and organic varies from 5% paid/95% Organic all the way up to 50/50 and more tilted towards paid. The average across all categories is about 89% of search traffic is organic. Car rental actually gets 54% of its traffic from paid search. This is very useful data on an aggregate/category level. Considerations include weighing the proportion of natural versus paid against the absolute volume.

In any case, when dealing with thousands and tens of thousands of keywords, so many things to consider. Even as deep as the delicate balancing act between PR teams and sales. So: used a centralized organizational structure for all search program management. They set up best practices, then moved on to tactical SEO and SEM execution, followed by establishing the reporting and analytics software framework. Also, then line up search with other marketing efforts… The Intel Viiv press release resulted in 15,000% more Google searches! He ends up with two quotes: Andrew Lang “He uses statistics as a drunken man uses lamp posts – for support rather than illuminations.” Sherlock Holmes: “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data…”

What does this mean? Marketing is changing, and online is going to con tin ue to be a larger percentage of the overall mix. Measurement becomes that much more important. Must use solid data to make sensible decisions.
